- <H2> Graduating from college was quite a feat in my family. I was the first of 22 grandchildren to accomplish that goal in the late 1970's. Successful, right? Employable, maybe not.The conundrum was that my major was Art!! My parent's concern, "What woman in her right mind in the late 1970's goes to school to get an art degree?" But, I tempered that argument declaring my major as Art Education. And, a good choice it was for I love art education. I go to work everyday and get to draw and paint and explore the endless possibilities while helping my students to learn through art. But, before my career became a reality I struggled to find a job. I tinkered in this and that, making bows (really), polishing jewelry, and selling furniture, but none of those "life experiences" were fulfilling. Then, one day I came across an advertisement for an interior decorating position with a very prominent nationally know company in our local paper. I knew that I didn't have the credentials to be called an interior designer but I also knew that I was determined to get this job!I applied and surprisingly received a call for an interview. More surprising, I was hired! The owner told me that my designing and sales skills were far above those of my fellow interviewees but, I would have to brush up on my vocabulary (apparently you can't call a sofa a couch!) After scouring the job market for over 2 years my family finally started to look at me as a fellow bread winner rather than an under or sometimes unemployed college graduate. I left my decorating position after 3 years to start a family. I dabbled independently as a designer for a few years until my children outnumbered the adults in the household. When our kids finally started school, it was time to look for some additional source of income so I went back to searching. A teaching job with benefits was the perfect solution for a working mom and a self-employed dad. So, with some addition education and more loan debt, I was fortunate enough to land a teaching position. I have not regretted that decision one day nor have I ever wished that I had chosen a different path. Throughout the years, I have happily and willingly helped countless family and friends with different design projects in their homes and offices. It has be a hobby for me as well as an outlet for my own creativity. Four years ago, I took a sabbatical from my teaching position to spend with my husband, now disabled. At that time, a friend hired me to renovate and decorate a Victorian home into law offices. I fell in love again with the excitement of color, design, and furnishings as well as creating beautiful spaces to work and live. The past 4 years have been a whirlwind. Along with teaching full time, spending time with three grown children and their families in three different states, I've been designing. I find designing appeals to my creativity and is truly soothing to my soul. Now, fast forward 35 years. On June 1st, I retired from teaching. I'll be leaving my colleagues, my friends, students and a job I love. But, I will embark on a new journey and will spend some well earned timed with my family. And, as I go down this path of discovery I am opening a new door for my own creativity designing stylish interiors that Feel Like Home. As one career ends another one begins...
